Karina Gauvin releases new album “Marie-Hubert, Fille du Roy” with Atma Classique

Through French and Quebecois folk pieces, Karina Gauvin channels the experience of her direct ancestor, Marie-Hubert, who at 15, as one of Louis XIV’s “Fille du Roy”, was sent to populate the New World. In 1670, she crossed the Atlantic from Paris to New France (now Quebec) and left behind a life of hardship for the promise of a new life.

After exploring her ancestry, Gauvin fell upon scores handed down 30 years ago by Louise Roy, a soprano. These were folk harmonizations from the first part of the twentieth century by significant Canadian figures such as Gabriel Cusson and Ernest MacMillan.

Gauvin arranged these works for harp, winds, piano, and strings alongside Pierre MacLean, Claude Lapalmen, and Valerie Milot. She breathes new life into these traditional works and takes us on a unique journey that has shaped Canada as we know it.
